About
Who we are

For nearly half a century, public television station Thirteen/WNET New York has been dedicated to the idea that television can be a consistently positive force in people’s lives. Through its international, national and local productions, its regional broadcasts, educational outreach, and multimedia projects, Thirteen has used the power of television to teach, to inspire, to celebrate our cultural riches, to explore the natural world, to open discussion of important issues, to give voice to underserved segments of the population, and generally to create viewing experiences characterized by depth, substance and lasting significance.

One of the major producing stations for PBS, Thirteen is one of the key program providers for public television stations across America, bringing such acclaimed series as GREAT PERFORMANCES, NATURE, AMERICAN MASTERS, THE NEWSHOUR WITH JIM LEHRER, NOW WITH DAVID BRANCACCIO, CHARLIE ROSE, RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY, SECRETS OF THE DEAD, WIDE ANGLE, EXPOSÉ: AMERICA’S INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS and CYBERCHASE - as well as the work of Bill Moyers - to audiences nationwide. In the course of pursuing its public service mission, Thirteen has made definitive contributions to the history of the television medium, pioneering entirely new television genres. From NEW YORK: A DOCUMENTARY FILM, TEXAS RANCH HOUSE and SIMON SCHAMA’S POWER OF ART to THE RISE AND FALL OF JIM CROW, SLAVERY AND THE MAKING OF AMERICA and AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVES, Thirteen’s major, multi-part documentaries in the sciences and humanities have continually transformed the television set into a media resource for illumination and discovery.

As the flagship public broadcaster in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metro area, Thirteen reaches millions of viewers each week. Thirteen airs the best of American public television along with its own local productions such as NEW YORK VOICES, THE NEW YORK WALKING TOURS, REEL 13, and REEL NEW YORK - ensuring the presence of a truly community-based media resource in a time of dramatic media consolidation and the loss of local media outlets. Through unique, pioneering initiatives, Thirteen is leading public broadcasting into the future, expanding its offerings through new technology and partnerships. Thirteen’s recent merger with sister station WLIW created a new, stronger presence for public television in the New York area. The introduction of a range of digital channels and services - including ThirteenHD, Thirteen Kids, Create, World, Thirteen On Demand, and Thirteen Kids On Demand have significantly expanded viewing options and audiences.

The launch of V-me - the first national public television service for Latino viewers in the U.S. - extends public television quality to an entirely new and increasingly prominent sector of the public.

Thirteen Online offers in-depth online companion pieces to Thirteen’s national series and original online material to complement Thirteen’s numerous educational initiatives, providing some of the most popular content on the Web. And Blog Thirteen offers fresh perspectives on the media. Thirteen’s dedication to educational outreach - a factor that sets it apart from almost every other television outlet - can be seen all year long, on air, online and in the community. And that educational outreach has acquired a powerful new dimension with the launch of the annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning, a spring event that attracts thousands of teachers, students, parents, administrators, and experts to Manhattan for a two-day conference devoted to key educational issues. In its many roles, Thirteen pursues a tradition of innovation and uncompromising quality by wielding the power of television in the interest of individuals, community and the nation.
